Coconut Island Resort Complex
Project Type
Masterplanning
Location
Sanya, Hainan Island, China
The project was designed as an open-air retail, dining, and entertainment hub for the northern end of the Haitang Bay resort district, serving as the gateway to a larger Coconut Island hospitality master plan. The project was organized around a man-made canal connected to a larger waterway system running parallel to the ocean, linking over 16 resorts.
To comply with local zoning density rules, the entire project was designed to give the appearance of being below grade, with major vehicular traffic routed at the rooftop level. The pedestrian experience was enhanced with small-scale points of interest and rest areas, drawing loose inspiration from the San Antonio Riverwalk.
The project spanned almost 300,000 square feet of retail and featured an 18,000-seat sports arena, a movie multiplex, employee housing, and a water and light show in the main lagoon. This show projected historically themed entertainment onto the underside of the main arrival bridge.
Services included master planning, conceptual design, and coordination with the Local Design Institute through construction documentation.
