Canopy by Hilton Downtown Tempe

Project Type

Hotel

Location

Tempe, Arizona

As part of a larger master plan, with predetermined massing and material choices. Using these constraints as a design generator, the building's exterior was approached as a creative exercise in patterning. The hotel's design was localized by transforming ASU's fight song into a visual composition through the use of a spectrogram. The resulting pattern was then applied to the panelized facade in the form of three colors of varying widths representing the tones and tempo of the song. When viewed from the street, the song can be read from west to east, and it repeats twice on each elevation, restarting at the 6th floor.

This 14-story hotel was designed to include a variety of amenities, such as a gathering/living room space, a full-service restaurant and bar, a meeting space, a gym, and a rooftop pool and bar experience.

In addition to serving as the architectural design lead for the hotel, I also took on the role of Design Director for the interior spaces, infusing elements from Tempe's and ASU's history into the rooms and public spaces.

Services included architectural and interior design, entitlements, and art coordination.
Designed in the capacity of Design Principal at Allen + Philp Partners.
