Four Seasons Resort
Project type
Resort
Location
Sanya, Hainan Island, China
Designed as the first Four Seasons in China's emerging tropical destination on the Southern coast of Hainan Island. The project involved a detailed fusion of traditional Chinese architecture, the cultural influences of the indigenous Li tribe, and the programmatic requirements of a modern 6-star resort. The hotel's five masses, symbolic of Wuzhi Mountain, the highest mountain on Hainan Island, are comprised of 300 six-star ocean view suites reaching 19 stories high, with an additional three stories below ground.
The 600,000sf project includes conference space, an all-day dining facility, a specialty restaurant, and a beach/poolside experience. Guests arrive through an elevated car court and cross a pedestrian bridge, revealing a significant water feature to the east and the signature tea house to the west, before entering the expansive lobby with 30-foot high ceilings and views of the South China Sea.
Including outbuildings, the spa compound, and for-sale residences, the overall construction area exceeds one million square feet. The hotel was just one of four hotels planned as part of the Coconut Island masterplan.
Services included programming, master planning, conceptual design, and interior planning.
